Manpower matters: trade union ballots

Article Abstract:

The platform of the Conservative party in the U.K. in 1979 had as one of its main points the weakening of the trade unions which were seen as partly responsible for the deindustrialization of the country. The Employment Acts of 1980 and 1982 oblige trade unions to use secret ballots on a number of issues. These new issues on which trade unions members must vote are the close shop, industrial action, the use of political funds, and the election of executives. The government decided to provide financial assistance to motivate secret balloting. So far, 72,300 pounds sterling have been paid out to unions to finance ballots.

Manpower matters: flexible working practices

Article Abstract:

Organizations are stressing the need for greater flexibility in their employment policies in order to meet rapidly changing market demands. Several forms of flexibility are examined, including functional flexibility; contractual flexibility, such as sub-contracting or the use of temporary agency staff, part-time working, and consulting arrangements; financial flexibility; and others. Finally, attitude flexibility is necessary if innovation is to occur and if the true benefits of flexible employment policies are to be gained.

Manpower matters: assessment center techniques

Article Abstract:

Many large corporations are currently using assessment centers to evaluate candidate performance. For these evaluations to work effectively such techniques as tests, job simulations, and interviews are used. The use of such techniques is not an end in itself; perhaps the most important part of the process is the interpretation of the results.
