Maritime industry

Article Abstract:

The maritime and shipping industry is facing an uncertain future in 1999 with partial deregulation, substandard vessel regulation, lower commodity prices, and the lingering financial crisis in Asia. The Ocean Shipping Reform Act, which takes effect in May 1999, is expected to influence shipping rates, espescially for large shippers and associations. There is little reason for investors to purchase these stocks in late 1998 or through 1999.

Maritime industry

Article Abstract:

Several sectors of the maritime shipping industry, such as containerships, are expected to see rate increases in 1998 as the Asian countries will try to export goods to the US. Rates are also expected to rise for tankers as well, after falling in 1997, but the bulk shipping market is depressed and is likely to remain so through the year 2000. These stocks are risky for investors in 1998, although the outlook for tankers is more positive.

Maritime industry

Article Abstract:

Import demand is being boosted by the Asian currency devaluation and prices are being raised by liner carriers for the first time in ten years as a result of this demand. However, equipment oversupply over the last several years has lowered profits for container leasing firms. These stocks have high prices in 1998, especially when considering market volatility and the unpredictable and wide swings in prices.
