Microsoft, Wang reach accord to put imaging technology in Windows 95

Article Abstract:

Microsoft and Wang Laboratories reached an agreement that will include Wang's imaging technology in Microsoft's upcoming Windows 95 OS, which is due in Aug 1995. Under the agreement, Microsoft will invest $90 million in preferred Wang stock, convertible to 10% of Wang's common stock at $23 per share. The agreement is designed to use Wang's technology to help Microsoft create paperless office features with its new operating system. Wang receives a huge boost to its business because large companies will tend to use Wang hardware to implement paperless office systems with Windows 95. Wang, an early leader in the word processing market, filed for bankruptcy in 1992. Wang's business plan since leaving bankruptcy protection in 1993 has targetted computer repair services and imaging technology. Wang's stock rose $1.563 to $15.875 on Apr 13, 1995 in response the agreement.

Wang Labs, shifting focus, will sell IBM computers; loss-plagued firm to stress office software lines over making hardware

Article Abstract:

Wang Laboratories Inc and IBM have a strategic agreement under which Wang plans to decrease its presence as a computer manufacturer and instead sell IBM microcomputers and workstations under its own label and minicomputers under the IBM name. This withdrawal from hardware production and emphasis on office automation software is a significant change for Wang. Industry analysts expect the decision to lead to additional layoffs at Wang and additional restructuring charges. These problems should be partially offset by IBM's expected $25- to $75 million investment in Wang. IBM gains access to Wang's customers and the exclusive distribution agreement prevents Wang from making a similar deal with another computer maker. Observers express doubts that Wang can make the transition to primarily a software publisher in the brief time it has, given its financial difficulties.
