Microsoft asks for dismissal of U.S. suit

Article Abstract:

Microsoft files a request in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, asking for a dismissal of the government's antitrust suit. Microsoft says the Justice Department and 20 states are trying to 'distract the court from the fatal defects in their claims by slinging ... mud.' Microsoft's request for a dismissal comes in response to a DOJ brief filed in the week of Aug 31, 1998, in which new evidence bolstering the notion that Microsoft competes unfairly is presented. Microsoft disparages the new charges, characterizing them as 'irrelevant facts' and 'a desperate attempt to cloud the issues.' Microsoft's lawyers argue that evidence not specified in the original lawsuit filed in May 1998 does not belong with the case. They say the government's attempt to introduce new evidence without discussing the original charges demonstrates a lack of confidence in the case filed in May.

It takes time to build a Xanadu for Citizen Gates

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Chmn Bill Gates, whose net worth is estimated at $10 billion, is building a palatial estate on prime waterfront land near Seattle. The 40,000-sq-ft Gates home was originally slated to be completed in 1994 at a cost of $15 million, but has now been rescheduled for completion in 1996 at a cost of $30 million. This price tag will purchase such amenities as a reception hall capable of holding 150 guests, an elaborate waterfall-spa-smimming pool complex, video walls programmable with electronic displays of great art works, and a live salmon stream and built-in estuary. Despite the lofty price tag, Gates and his team of architects, James Cutler and Peter Bohlin, are aiming for an edifice which avoids ostentation on the outside and reflects the architectural values of the Pacific Northwest style, as manifested by the dominance of local stone and cedar materials.
