Microsoft bids for business of Web users

Article Abstract:

Microsoft is planning two new moves to attract online users. First, the company has gradually grouped its various Web sites under the MSN.com name while adding the type of search, E-mail and chat features that have made big Internet players Yahoo and AOL popular. This move extends the overhaul of the Microsoft Network, which has struggled as a conventional online service against AOL. Second, an internal memo written by Chmn Bill Gates envisions Microsoft delivering a new class of online business and consumer services that will go far beyond the reach of portals. An example is its 'Megaserver' software, which would update and synchronize information for consumers and businesses. Users then could access the data from any computer or from numerous computer-based devices such as handheld tablets and Internet-enabled televisions. Customers would pay for the services on a monthly or annual basis.

Article Abstract:

Vignette Corp, based in Austin, TX, makes StoryServer, software that simplifies Web publishing. StoryServer generates templates that separate format from content so that an online editor can update a story without having to reformat and reprogram a page. StoryServer also makes it easy to change a repeating element or alter the look and feel of a site. Among Vignette's customers is Ziff Davis Inc, which is migrating its network of 25 ZDNet sites onto StoryServer. Others include the Chicago Tribune and CBS SportsLine. Vignette has not yet made a profit, but the company's revenues are rising rapidly. Vignette is working on a new product called Syndication Server, which will enable users to broadcast content and services to affiliated sites.
