Microsoft may agree to some restrictions

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp. continues to seek a settlement of the government's antitrust case, in negotiations in Chicago. The government has threatened to split the software company into two units along business and consumer lines. Microsoft says it would accept conduct restrictions and an end to agreements with PC manufacturers that limit their ability to sell PC's with competing operating systems.

U.S., Microsoft resume antitrust tussle

Article Abstract:

The U.S. District Court, Washington, D.C. will resume the government case against Microsoft Corp. over the company's Windows XP software. Settlement talks will take place during these hearings and private negotiations over Microsoft's conduct. The Justice Department may want Microsoft not retaliate when rival companies distribute their software on personal computers and to not force anticompetitive contracts on other companies. The fear is that Microsoft's release of Windows XP is pushing a monopoly into fresh markets. 18 states have joined the Justice Dept. antitrust case.
