Big Taiwan chip maker to acquire rival

Article Abstract:

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's 2nd multi-billion dollar acquisition in 2 weeks will be to acquire worldwide Seminconductor Manufacturing for between $5 and $8 billion. TSMC's capacity will rise to 14% and give the company a giant market share in the contract manufacturing semiconductor business. Chairman Morris Chang believes this merger will still not give his company enough capacity for customer demand. International sales of chips skyrocketed 25% in a year.

Global PC slowdown hits Taiwan's Acer

Article Abstract:

Acer Inc.'s 61% second quarter profit plummet is a reflection of a fall of contract manufacturing orders from International Business Machines and sluggish world sales of personal computers. Acer's total profit rose to $94.1 million (U.S.) and sales fell 22%. Computer companies are facing stiffer competition daily so many feel Acer's ace will be to expand more into the China market.

Rockwell to spin off chip operations, cut work force; charges of $625 million set in overhaul that leaves firm a shadow of itself

Article Abstract:

Rockwell International announced that it will spin off its Semiconductor Systems Division as part of its third reorganization since 1996. Plans also call for Rockwell to reduce its remaining international work force by 9%, or 3,800 jobs, and take $625 million in charges for the 3rd qtr 1998 ending today. Rockwell's Semiconductor Systems Division ranks as the largest computer-modem chip operation in the world, but Rockwell Chmn and CEO Don H. Davis said rapidly-changing technology had rendered the unit as volatile. Dwight Decker will head the Semiconductor Systems Division as Chmn and CEO, which Rockwell said will start the 3rd qtr 1998 and fiscal 1998 with operating losses. The moves will leave Rockwell with its industrial automation and aircraft-avionics divisions, as well as fiscal 1998 revenues projected at $6.8 billion. By comparison, the company reported nearly $13 billion in fiscal 1995 revenue.
