Network Associates plans to sell or close 2 units, swings to a loss

Network Associates Inc. will try to sell its PGP Security unit and its firewall business as it continues working to cut costs and increase revenue. The company posted a $11.3 million loss in its third quarter, as compared to a net income of $4.1 million from the same period of the previous year. Closing or selling the PGP and firewall units is expected to save $50 million in 2002, with a one-time restructuring charge of $9 million to $11 million in the fourth quarter.

Microsoft to pitch wider use of Internet to stimulate market for home banking

Microsoft has unveiled its Open Financial Connectivity plan, which utilizes several Internet standards for managing and scrambling data to protect it from misuse or theft. The plan aims to expand the use of the Internet for home banking by supplying the technical capabilities that will help banks establish connections to customers using Microsoft's Money personal-finance program. The plan also challenges rival Intuit's transaction-processing business. Intuit Services is often used by banks to supply the dial-up connections and computer services that will help users conduct home-banking tasks. Microsoft's offering will bypass this need. The company's effort will encourage electronic commerce and help establish connections with banks.
