Modeling contribution-spans of scientists in a field: the case of cochlear implants

Article Abstract:

Scientific literature is used to model the contribution-spans of scientists involved in cochlear implant research. Estimates on the contribution-span and the probability of a scientist ceasing to contribute to the field are presented based on data provided by the experience of over 1200 scientists conducting research on cochlear implants between 1973 and 1989. Analysis of the data shows a median contribution-span of five years for the entire population. It is also indicated that risk of ceasing contribution is greatest during the first year and declines sharply after five years.
