Modern Office Computer Test: Giving Users What They Want: Apple III

Article Abstract:

Lisa and the Apple III have put Apple back in contention with the IBM. The Apple III microcomputer, suited to the single business user, runs on an 8-bit 6502 processor and Sophisticated Operating System (SOS) which can handle an extensive number of tree-structured files. Business Basic and Pascal are available. User-friendly software includes Quick File which can handle 635 records. Apple Writer is quite comprehensive for the average user. Senior Analyst resembles MultiPlan somewhat. Apple III with 128K memory expandable to 256K, two disk drives (hard disk optional), keyboard with number pad, and RS232 serial interface, retails for $3295 (Australia).

Modern Office Computer Test; Burroughs B20

Article Abstract:

The B20 series of Burroughs microcomputers uses the Intel 8086 processor, Burroughs' BTOS operating system, plus hard disk drives and memory ot varying sizes. Other features include a fifteen inch-monitor and wide margin keyboard. Software consists of Write One word processing, Multiplan financial planning, and Interpreter Basic. The modular accounting package tested has an excellent training text combined with screen exercises. The costs range from a bare workstation without disk at $5540 to a 512k color graphics model with fifteen megabytes of hard disk storage at $23,800. The B21 is capable ot networking a cluster of four workstations.

Modern Office Computer Test - Alphatronic P3

Article Abstract:

The Adler Alphatronic P3 package consisting of computer, two 5.25 inch disk drives, software, and training is in the higher price range of personal computers. The keyboard is given a high rating but the green monitor is somewhat hard to read. The CP-M operating system can be copied onto only three disks. The accounts receivable and Lexicom 2 word processor have manuals with good instructions for beginners, and the accounts receivable features several special reports. The Multiplan spreadsheet provides protection against overwriting and a sorting option. Four hours training accompanies each software package.
