An understanding of the kinds of software used in computer systems is necessary in order to choose correctly. A general operating system, such as CPM or UNIX, which is used with a generic processor as the Z80 is preferred over a Disk Operating System (DOS) written for a particular computer. A copying program to provide back-up or a sort program are categorized as utility programs. Applications programs which perform a particular task can be purchased as packages or custom written and include spreadsheets, data base packages, and word processing. The reliability and clarity of manuals is paramount. Sample questions to be asked and reading material are suggested.
