Most software makers, led by Microsoft, to post strong results for latest quarter

Article Abstract:

The majority of software vendors are expected to post strong financial results for the quarter ended Dec 31, 1994. The robust growth is due to the continuing move towards office automation, strong PC sales and increased game sales during the 1994 holiday season. Microsoft Corp has succeeded in taking more market share away from Lotus and Borland by dropping the price of its Office software suite. Microsoft is expected to post earnings of $364 million and revenues totalling $1.45 billion. Borland is expected to post a loss of $20 million for the quarter, with revenue coming in at $60 million. The company is suffering from slow sales and stiff competition from Microsoft. Lotus expects a fourth-quarter net of $17 million, in contrast to a net of $30 million one year earlier. The company's earnings have suffered from weak sales in Europe and competition from Microsoft.
