Ameritech to buy cellular operation for $512 million

Article Abstract:

Ameritech Corp, the Chicago-based Bell telephone company, will acquire CyberTel Financial Corp and CyberTel RSA Cellular LP, for $512 million. Ameritech says it expects to complete the purchase, from CyberTel's management and affiliates of JMB Realty Corp, by the end of Sep 1991. The acquisition will dilute Ameritech's earnings by about 20 cents a share in 1992, but in the long term, Ameritech's annual growth could increase by six- to eight percent. Ameritech's strategy involves the expansion of wireless services into areas contiguous with its telephone territories. Ameritech's transaction must be approved by both state and federal regulators.

AT&T discount for big firms hits legal snag

Article Abstract:

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) must justify its decision to allow AT and T to offer its Tariff 12 service, a federal appeals court orders. Tariff 12 is a customized package of services to individual customers at a discounted price. The FCC must clarify how voice and data services offered as parts of customized service differ from generally available services. Many analysts say that the task is a formidable one for the FCC since the services are nearly identical. The court order is expected to stall AT and T's Tariff 12 efforts, which it has been pursuing since 1987.
