Netscape uses browser to beef up Web business

Article Abstract:

Mountain View, Calif.-based Netscape continues to tweak its browser/Web business. Now that it gives the browser away at no charge, it is integrating other features to allow users to do more after they "land" at Netcenter. Besides free e-mail and some new information services, Netscape is working with Excite Inc. to develop its search capability. The company does have to be careful about alienating some competing services that maintain a link to the Netscape browser.

In this role, which will not include AOL's technical operations or Netscape's "software efforts," the 27-year-old co-founder of the Internet browser will be charged with keeping people at and morale up at Netscape in addition to leading a team that will keep AOL competitive.
