Last year, although Noranda Inc.'s mines boosted output and operating profits jumped, poor industry conditions caused the closure of a smelter, a cut-back on exploration expenses and the mothballing of a magnesium plant. Shares offer a high yield, dividend were paid out in stock and earnings remain hostage to volatile prices.
