New product models: practice, shortcomings and desired improvements

Article Abstract:

Research shows that organizational product or service development generally takes place within an organization's marketing department or in distinct groups specifically geared for development. These departments take care of development from conceptualization to formulation of market launch strategies. The development initiatives, however, could benefit from more formal and quantitative analyses. The suggested emphasis on varied analytical efforts are considered most appropriate within the early planning and conceptualization stages.

From experience: balancing the product development process: achieving product and cycle-time excellence in high technology industries

Article Abstract:

An effective product development process (PDP) may be characterized by a balance of responsibilities between management and development groups. This balance minimizes problems characteristic of new product development, such as changes in design, lost marketing opportunities and budget overruns. Four control mechanisms are determined. Core groups, phase reviews, systematic development method and the presence of a product approval committee are identified as keys to a balanced PDP.
