New search spaces for sequencing problems with application to job shop scheduling

Article Abstract:

A methodology for developing search heuristics for sequencing and scheduling problems is discussed. The methodology has a number of beneficial properties, including its objective independence when applied to the scheduling problem and the applicability of its basic principle in formulating heuristics for a wide variety of sequencing problems. The effectiveness of the methodology is tested by applying it to the job shop scheduling problem with the minimum makespan objective. Results of this application are promising.

Search theory and the manufacturing progress function

Article Abstract:

The manufacturing progress function is examined according to the premises set by a theory for random search for a fixed population of technological avenues. The theory supports the power function relationship between total output and unit costs that was usually witnessed. It in addition supports the initial rates of improvement that are not as big as those forecasted later by the power function relationship, the end to cost cuts, and the irregularity of improvements.

Organizational information requirements, media richness and structural design

Article Abstract:

The processing of information by organizations is examined. Equivocality and uncertainty are delineated as two forces with repercussions on organizations' information processing. The structure of the organization and the management of internal systems will decide both the quality and quantity of data provided to management.
