The need for Australia's individual taxpayers and super funds to review their strategies in the light of developments including the Ralph review of business taxation is discussed. Share investors should develop tax strategies for the possibility of significant losses if the market undergoes a large decline in 2000.

The profit-risk ante goes up: riskier investment portfolios are favored over diversified super portfolios under the Ralph recommendations

Article Abstract:

The results of a study by financial planner Graham Horrocks indicate that recommended Australian tax changes would favor riskier retirement investment portfolios. The changes have been proposed in a report by a committee headed by John Ralph. The projected results of nine different investment strategies are compared.

Australian tax and investment advisors warn that the new tax reforms restrict personal investment activities and suggest investors proceed cautiously. The reforms will affect residential property investments and income-splitting, perhaps ending the latter entirely. Investors will increase risk to benefit from the capital gains tax, while its rate for superannuation funds is poor.
