Are ion-exchange processes central to understanding drug-resistance phenomena?

Article Abstract:

Recent scientific data show that alterations in transmembrane ion transport are involved in the multidrug resistance of tumor cells, bacteria and malarial parasites. There is also scientific evidence proving the participation of nonspecific drug pumps in conferring drug resistance in these species. These findings confirm the predictions of an 'indirect' drug-partitioning model which suggests that altered drug accumulation in resistant cells and microorganisms result from changes in pH gradients, electric membrane potential and other biophysical parameters.
