'Content management' is top goal of IBM

Article Abstract:

IBM is hoping to catch Oracle in the database management software market by moving toward an 'unstructured' system in which its content manager software is used by database providers to offer film clips and other more advanced services. The system can also enhance access to 'structured' written data when the data is scanned into 'unstructured' form. IBM is dedicating 300 sales personnel to the new marketing push for its content management products and services.

Noise inhibitor: Rivals of Microsoft find collaboration is easier said then done: When the chips are down, factions often rise up and squables ensue: Will IBM play high sheriff?

Article Abstract:

Sun Microsystems Inc., International Business Machines Corp., Oracle Corp., Netscape Communications Corp. and other high technology companies join an informal consortium to develop a common computing platform independent of the Microsoft Corp. This consortium, dubbed Noise, hopes to develop a standard that will store software on a centrally managed server, moving away from the PC dominated model that gives Microsoft its huge market share. This type of industry wide cooperation is unprecedented in American industry and fraught with troubles, foremost among its problems is cooperation between consortiums members.
