More warrants catch less of the 'fun money': competition is hot in the warrants market as more issuers fight over depleted volumes

The slump in the Australian sharemarket since Mar 2000 has reduced warrant trading volumes by around half. Further problems will arise as new issuers enter the market.

Warrants go wild

The warrants market has become one of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the Australian Stock Exchange. Macquarie Bank has dominated the warrants market since the mid-1990s, but is now facing competition from players including SG Australia, BNP and ANZ Banking Group.
