Not just bean counters anymore

Article Abstract:

South Central Bell Telephone Co's accounting department has proven itself to be an important component of the management team. The opportunity for the management accountants to demonstrate that they were more than bean counters presented itself when South Central Bell decided to reorganize in 1988. The accounting department played a vital role in ensuring the success of the merger between regulated South Central Bell and nonregulated South Central Bell Advance Systems Inc. The merger challenged the telephone company's accountants into shedding their traditional role as accurate and controlled transaction processors, and assuming the roles of interpreter, adviser and partner. It became necessary for these accountants to understand the relationship between figures and business activity, develop plans of action, evaluate alternatives, and make decisions.
