Novell counters Microsoft, pairing Unix, NetWare

Article Abstract:

Novell announces that it will counter competitor Microsoft's dramatic price reduction for its Microsoft Windows NT operating system by offering the UnixWare operating system and promoting seamless integration between UnixWare and Novell's popular NetWare network operating system. Novell CEO Ray Noorda states that the company will begin offering programming tools that enable seamless operation between UnixWare and NetWare by the beginning of 1994. Novell hopes to release its AppWare software layer, which can be used to enable developers to easily adapt Windows applications to run on UnixWare and Unix operating systems from other vendors. While Noorda had also hoped to announce more progress on the standardization of Unix, the executive admits that there are still a few major vendors that have yet to fully commit themselves in backing such a standard.

IBM's OS/2/2.1 debut is modest success, but launch of rival Windows NT looms

Article Abstract:

IBM's new OS/2 2.1 operating system is meeting moderate success since its release, and its long-term success remains unclear as the market still awaits the release of Microsoft's much-anticipated Windows NT operating system. In the first two weeks of its release, OS/2 2.1 has received mostly positive reviews. Version 2.1 has sold 200,000 copies in the two weeks. IBM has largely underestimated demand and has thereby left some distributors and customers empty-handed. In comparison, Microsoft's Windows 3.1 sold three million copies during its first six weeks on the market. OS/2 2.1 is being preloaded by several hardware vendors, including Compaq and Unisys, based on customers' request.
