Office technology: streamlining the controller's job

Article Abstract:

New office technology offers the promise of streamlining a controller's job and increasing productivity. Within the next five years, the productivity of financial offices will be enhanced by four office technologies: workstation/graphics processing; executive information systems; artificial intelligence/expert systems; and document imaging systems. Workstation/graphics processing is the basis for the successful commercial exploitation of the other technologies. Executive Information Systems help senior management with summarizing information and monitoring business performance, while artificial intelligence/expert systems simulate the reasoning of experts through specialized programming as an aid to executive decision-making. Document imaging allows the storage of forms on optical disks greatly increasing the capacity for economical storage of documents.

Controlling unemployment costs

Article Abstract:

To control unemployment taxes, businesses should pay attention to the areas of internal claims processing, terminations, unemployment hearing, and errors made by state agencies. Companies must focus on: the terminology and context of the claims processing system; the supervisory hiring, disciplining and firing of employees; and the handling of employee hearings. Companies can reduce their tax burden by: hiring an expert on state employment regulations; educating supervisors to their responsibilities in preventing claims liability; and preparing witnesses before unemployment hearings. Companies should also review all policies to determine any need for revision and should verify tax rates and voluntary contributions.
