Ed O'Neal, the chief executive of Australia's fifth-largest bank, St George Bank, and his management team plan to effect 1000 operational improvements by August 2001. O'Neal believes the improvements will help his bank to catch up with other banks in areas such as transaction processing and wealth management, and they will also raise takeover premiums for shareholders.

Where do banks grow now?

Issues concerning the economic and market situation of the four largest Australian banks are discussed. Particular attention is given to the fact that the four banks tend to overgrow their internal domestic market and are cautious about international expansion.
