Organisational commitment in the temporary-help service industry

Article Abstract:

The level of commitment exhibited by temporary-help service (THS) employees is influenced by the degree of support and encouragement rendered by the firm where they work for. Results gathered from a regression analysis involving 20 THS companies revealed that job-related factors, including age, tenure, benefits available, education and mobility perceptions, create a substantial impact on the level of organizational commitment manifested by THS workers. These results also belie assumptions that THS workers tend to extend lower level of commitment compared to core workers.

When men and women meet

Article Abstract:

Gender is important in organisations, and is worth examining as men and women have different attitudes. According to Deborah Tannen, a sociolinguist, men and women often have disputes because they do not see the world in the same light. Research indicates that when women are told to form a group they immediately build relationships whereas men consider tasks of more importance than relationships. There needs to be an equilibrium between relationships and tasks in any organisation.

Public interest in moral and ethical aspects of public and business life is showing a revival, with the subject of the 'stakeholder economy' being given wide prominence by politicians. One situation where individuals can show their commitment to being stakeholders is the working environment. The kinds of behaviour that can be expected from people at work are discussed.
