The works of Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, Philip Roth, Saul Bellow and Herman Melville are filled with US-Jerusalem comparisons. Bellow's epic poem 'Clarel' is devoted to the theme. Modern apocalyptic writing mostly centers on the role of America in a final Middle East confrontation in Jerusalem.

Lost and found: remembering Henry Roth

Article Abstract:

Author Henry Roth died in Oct 1995, and is best known for his 1934 book 'Call It Sleep' and the years of writer's block that affected his career, but helped him discover more about himself. He completed a second novel comprised of six volumes 'Mercy of a Rude Stream' before his death.
