Outlook improves as new units decline

Article Abstract:

The restaurant industry is predicted to post only a 2.2% increase in 1999, although interest in eating out is seen to continue and even intensify due to the strong economy, low unemployment and higher disposable income. The modest increase is attributed to the slowdown in expansion among restaurant companies as they opt to buy back shares given their robust cash flow. In fact, three of the four restaurant chains in the Standard & Poor 500 restaurant index, namely, Darden Restaurants, McDonald's and Wendy's, have been repurchasing shares. Two of the biggest challenges that the industry is predicted to encounter in 1999 are the labor shortage and stiff competition.

Why sexual harassment complaints fall on deaf ears

Article Abstract:

Sexual harassment cases occurring in prominent companies failed to be settled in the organizational level due to organizational inaction. These situations gave rise to the so-called 'deaf ear syndrome' since many organizations ignored sexual harassment complaints in spite of the potential damage caused by the cases. Three factors were involved in the organizational action, namely, inadequate policies and procedures on sexual harassment complaints, organizational features leading to inaction and managerial responses and rationalizations defending the harassment act.
