PC sales and big suppliers show strength

Article Abstract:

First quarter 1998 PC sales leaped 16% in the US and 14% worldwide, according to Dataquest, compared to International Data's (IDC) 14% and 10% report over the same period. The market-research companies' figures show respectable industry growth, with the largest PC suppliers strengthening their position. The statistics also indicate that manufacturers are struggling with a consumer shift to low-end machines and oversupply of other products rather than a sharp drop in demand. IDC's report showed the top five PC suppliers boosting their market share to 53%, compared to 45% in the 1st qtr 1997. Dataquest reported shipments of 21.2 million, which represents a 14% improvement over 18.6 million in the 1st qtr 1997. Analysts blamed the slightly lower-than-anticipated result on inventory problems that may linger.

PC growth world-wide slowed in 1st quarter

Article Abstract:

Market research companies International Data (IDC) and Dataquest reported that growth in the PC industry slowed during 1st qtr 1997 but still remained healthy and robust. IDC reported a 16% increase in global sales over 1st qtr in 1996, with a total of 18.26 million machines sold. Compaq emerged as the global leader once again, followed by IBM, Packard-Bell-NEC, Dell and Toshiba. Dell experienced impressive gains during the quarter, and IBM realized a growth rate of 77% in the US. Apple, a traditional member of the top five, failed to make the list this year. The company reports shipping 600,000 machines during the first three months of 1997. IDC preliminary figures show Apple falling as low as eighth place, behind HP and Fujtisu.
