Maxtor to post fiscal 4th-quarter loss of $50 million; Quantum net rose 56%

Article Abstract:

Maxtor Corp expects to report a $50 million loss for the 4th qtr of 1990 ending Mar 31, 1991, while its rival Quantum Corp will post a 56 percent increase in profits for the period. Maxtor, a maker of hard disk drives for the computer industry, states that two-thirds of its losses stem from nonrecurring charges brought about by its recent restructuring. The company reduced its workforce by 10 percent in Jan 1991 and has suffered from a management shakeup. Quantum posted profit of $20 million, or 45 cents a share, which is up from the $12.8 million, or 31 cents a share, the company reported in the same period a year earlier. Quantum's outlook looks more promising then Maxtor's but Quantum officials caution against euphoria citing a softening microcomputer market.
