Two programs to help you blot out Web ads and speed surfing

Article Abstract:

Two software programs that block out unwanted Web-page advertising, and other unwanted graphics and sounds, were evaluated: AtGuard, made by WRQ Inc., and interMute, a product from Internet Mute Inc. They also can block certain Web tricks that invade one's privacy, such as the collecting of information about one's preference for particular Web sites and what sites one last visited. Both products work with the latest versions of Netscape and Microsoft Web browsers, as well as that embedded in America Online. AtGuard appears to be the more sophisticated product as its toolbar is less cluttered and it allows the user more customization options. It also offers features that interMute doesn't, such as allowing the user to build a firewall around one's PC. The major drawback for both these products is that customization is somewhat complicated. AtGuard costs $30 and interMute sells for $20.
