Growth of PC market continued in first quarter, research firms find

Article Abstract:

Reports from International Data Corp. and Dataquest Inc. for the first quarter show that the personal-computer market continues to grow at a good rate worldwide. Dell Computer Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. are gaining ground on compaq Computer Corp., which remains the market-share leader. IDC's forecast for the market is more sanguine, while Dataquest warns that the PC-market for business in the U.S. wil face saturation and stagnation.

Phoenix Technologies to let Net firms use its software in PC start-up process

Article Abstract:

Phoenix Technologies Ltd., supplier of about 70% of all personal computers' start-up software, is contracting with several Internet companies so they may brand their services with its software. AOL, Excite@Home Corp., Yahoo! Inc. and CNET Inc. will use the technology in exchange for sharing revenues with Phoenix. The San Jose, California software company hopes to have its boot-up software installed in unbranded personal computers, a market that, up until now, has been difficult for major Internet companies to reach.

H-P names Carly Fiorina, a Lucent star, to be CEO

Article Abstract:

Carleton Fiorina is chosen to succeed Lewis Platt as CEO of Hewlett-Packard Co. Ms. Fiorina was formerly the head of Lucent Technologies Inc.'s global-services division. Of the CEOs of the 20 largest public companies, she is the only woman. Richard Hackborn will serve as chairman; Mr. Platt will retire Dec. 31. Ms. Fiorina presided over a 50% increase in Lucent's global business last year, resulting in sales of $20 billion. Her H-P salary package includes stock estimated to compensate her for $70 million in unexercised Lucent options.
