Peters' principle puts Shipley in dire straits

Article Abstract:

New Zealand Prime Minister Jenny Shipley fired Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Winston Peters on Aug 13, 1998. This has led to a breakdown in the National-New Zealand First Coalition and there is possibility of early elections. It is uncertain whom the various ministers will side with and Shipley may be able to put off a vote of confidence for a while. If this government leaves, the microeconomic reform will stall.

NZ voters are wary of free-trade treaty

Article Abstract:

The Multilateral Agreement on Investment has raised concerns for New Zealand's pro-sovereignty factions, who fear the treaty would strip native peoples of lands and resources and flood the employment market with foreign workers. A study by the KPMG accountancy firm revealed that New Zealand keeps 90% of the value produced by foreign-owned companies, and that 0.25% of foreign company employees are not New Zealanders.

NZ slump hits hard after reform sacrifice

Article Abstract:

The government of New Zealand effectively closed down the country's automobile industry when it did away with import tariffs in May 1998. This was in response to economic factors caused by the Asian crisis, dry weather in the area, and nervousness in the industry and among consumers. Economic forecasters predict improvement in the country's financial situation for late 1998 and into 1999.
