Politics over Principle

Article Abstract:

Kuwait's minister of finance and planning has resigned following the rejection of his plan for patching up that country's collapsed Gulf Share Market in stocks. Speculators in this unofficial exchange caused its collapse by writing post-dated checks when buying stocks. Finance and planning minister Abdullatif Yousuf al- Hamad had wanted to prosecute these speculators, as did many of his countrymen. But the parliament agreed to rescue these speculators with public funds, precipitating al-Hamad's resignation. Many government officials are reported to have been involved in the Gulf Share Market.
