Privatization and agency status: identifying the critical factors for performance improvement

Article Abstract:

Research has been carried out in the UK on the relationship between the performance of an enterprise and whether it is in the private or public sector. Performance can be explained in terms of the internal environment of a body and a number of performance improvements can be linked to such changes, including the privatization of the National Freight Corporation. This is in line with contingency theory which emphasises the need for adaptation of internal environments to external environments.

Extending the cognitive approach to strategic change in organizations: some theory

Article Abstract:

Organizations can be analysed in terms of the types of arguments they use and the cognition systems in force. An excess of categorization can result in a cognitive structure which is monolithic, opposing change until s large-scale change is brought about. Segmented cognitive structures can result from an excess of particularization and lack coordination in adapting to change. The best type of structure to survive changes in a smooth manner is an articulated structure.

UK privatization: its impact on procurement

Article Abstract:

Companies change their procurement strategies following privatization, partly because of the increased need to lower costs in the new competitive market. A survey of the procurement managers of privatized companies showed that privatization caused supplier performance to be reviewed; outsourcing supply contracts to be increased; the profile of procurement to be raised; procurement strategy re-evaluated; and the procurement department's performance reassessed.
