Proprietorial control in family firms: some functions of 'Quasi-organic' management systems

Article Abstract:

An investigation into family-owned businesses' managerial strategies indicates that some decision-making responsibilities can be delegated without disturbing the authority of the proprietor. In addition, interviews with small business owners and proprietors demonstrate the likelihood of such firms to be run in a 'flexible' or 'democratic' manner in order to meet the changing and personal objectives of the proprietor-owner. It is argued that the family-owned business need not be studied as an aberration to most other forms of business.

The article examines the Japanese philosophy of kaizen, which emphasizes collectivism over individualism, employee empowerment, and their effects on management practices in three Swedish corporations. Approaching labor as an ethically embedded concept, rather than a perception of power, provides insight on how management practices manifest themselves in the workplace.
