The concept of ideology in organizational analysis: The sociology of knowledge or the social psychology of beliefs?

Article Abstract:

Ideology, the study of the nature and origins of ideas, consists of two opposing schools of thought: idealism, which holds that ideas emerge innately from minds, and materialism, which sees the origin of ideas as the consequence of the structural realities of the social system. In the field of organizational research, some recent studies have examined sets of belief in an idealist light; ideologies are examined without making reference to underlying values. However, the materialist concept of ideology, also known as the sociology of knowledge, permits more valuable analyses of organizations.
