Punitive damages award overturned

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court ruled to overturn a punitive damage award on the grounds that it was excessive and out of proportion to the actual offense. The case, BMW of North America Inc v. Gore, sparked a national debate over the placement of legal limits on punitive damages.

Sexual-harassment damages approved

The Supreme Court decided on Feb 26, 1995, that Title IX of a 1972 education law gives students attending schools receiving federal money who have been the victims of sexual harassment the right to sue for damages.

School-desegregation controls eased
