Quantifying the bullwhip effect in supply chains

Article Abstract:

Demand distortions in supply chains, called the "bullwhip" effect, are characterized by increases in forecast error and seasonality in upstream firms. Elimination of the problems caused by the effect, through methods such as a lead time reduction strategy, can afford firms with savings in pipeline costs and increase profitability by some 10% to 30%. However, it has been shown that the particular business environment also significantly determines the influence of the bullwhip effect on the firm.
