Race to the brink

Article Abstract:

The Chinese economy that is showing an acceleration in economic, credit as well as foreign trade growth will help the country emerge as one of the largest trading economies in the world. Analysts are worried about inflation, which is beginning to rise but more importantly they say that revaluing the currency will help in reining in the economy and at the same time a more effective financial system should be in place to help the economy ride the wave.

The Chinese authorities allow foreign investment in only 111 stocks but the Chinese stockmarket is likely to be fully opened to foreign investors during 2001. They also plan to have just one market in Shanghai rather than two.
