Railroad industry

Article Abstract:

Mergers are dramatically changing the US rail transportation landscape. Three mergers have been completed since Jun 1996, and CSX and Norfolk Southern are battling to acquire Conrail. Union Pacific's merger with Southern Pacific has resulted in the country's largest railroad. Railroad industry stocks, as a group, are likely to outperform the overall stock market in 1997.

Railroad industry

Article Abstract:

The railroad industry's stocks are expected to rise with the economy during the last years of the 1990s. The Union Pacific-Southern Pacific merger will probably be the last big railroad consolidation of 1996. Analysts predict that grain loadings will fall and intermodal traffic will increase. Joint ventures with Mexican rail lines may require extensive maintenance work.
