Raising the speed limit

Article Abstract:

The controversy on advantages and disadvantages of faster growth of the US economy is analyzed. The factors considered include the trade-off between growth and inflation, the overheating of the economy, competitive pressures which affect prices and productivity and the best approach to attain faster growth. It is suggested that the most important factor why wages have not increased and why firms have not increased prices significantly is mostly due to foreign competition. It is argued that the best approach to increase economic growth is through the deliberate application of proper monetary and fiscal policies.

"This time it's different." (1997 economic forecast)

Article Abstract:

Financial institutions' tightening of credit, the stock market's strong performance, the rise in corporate profits and the absence of inflation are expected to boost the national economy in 1997. The economic growth realized during 1996 can continue in 1997 if consumer spending increases and if companies continue to cut costs and downsize. Economic gains will also result if the stock market maintains its earnings and if interest rates and the bond market helps reduce the rate of inflation and budget deficit.

The only thing we have to fear...

Article Abstract:

The economic situation in the US for the 1990s is not as bad as many people realize. Several economic indicators are presented that reveal a number of bright spots in the economy for 1991. Government calculations has showed that the GDP improved during the 2nd to 4th qtr 1990. Such calculations, economic observers believe, indicate that the recession has reached its end during the 1st half of 1991.
