Improving the process of new product development

Article Abstract:

Results of a study on upgrading of new product development process (NPDP) is presented. Based on a survey of the NPDP practiced in 149 companies, a structured evaluation and improvement methodology is described. The practical application of this methodology for enhancing NPDP is tested within Delco Electronics Corp. Company wide awareness of NPDP-related problems and the immediate visibility of such problems to senior managers are among the benefits of the proposed methodology established in the practical application.

The new age of new product development: are we there yet?

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the importance of the top 24 management of technology (MOT) issues in new product development involving advanced technologies. Strategic Planning for Technology Products was identified as the top priority issue, but European and US participants do not fully agree on the importance of several issues. The results were useful in identifying priority new product development research projects and the extent to which specific MOT issues are of general concern among companies.

Coordination at different stages of the product design process

Article Abstract:

The coordination structure approach was used to illustrate how the coordination challenge faced by managers change over the life of time bound projects such as product design. Results revealed that the approach complements information processing as well as provides the foundation upon which information is communicated and processed. The approach also enables meaningful comparison of product development organizations from different firms at different times.
