Recasting enterprise zones: federal action could give a shot of adrenaline to what's already happening at the state level

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton's support of enterprise zones could bolster those that have already been created by states and cities to combat unemployment in inner-city and rural areas. Enterprise zones provide tax and regulatory relief to businesses to encourage them to operate companies in identified areas.

Hardening the rules on home offices

Article Abstract:

A US Supreme Court ruling on the case of anesthesiologist Nader Soliman restricts who can claim a home office income tax deduction to those who perform most of their work at home. The ruling could adversely affect consultants or others who conduct most of their work away from home.

Too few good enterprise zones

Article Abstract:

Some are criticizing Pres Clinton's enterprise zone policy for having too few zones and not enough tax exemption provisions for businesses and investors. Only nine areas are slated for major economic assistance, including social service grants and business tax credits.
