Reith's chance to play Santa

Article Abstract:

Long-term unemployment rates and jobs for youth are new priorities of the Australian government, and new workplace and youth-employment reforms by Employment and Workplace Minister Peter Reith may cut unemployment. Reith's proposed new workplace legislation may weaken labor but will benefit employment. Unemployment in Australia is 7.5%, and may fall to 7% by year-end 1999. Reith also explained that the goods and services tax will boost employment through export sector cost reductions and the removal of production taxes.

A fortified economy

Article Abstract:

The Australian economy is secured against a downturn with a room to move on interest rates and continuing government surpluses. Investors will have problems in meeting mortgage repayments and will be forced to sell their properties if interest rates rise substantially. The government has constructed several layers of defence which gives the Reserve Bank a room to lower interest rates to encourage growth.

Korea threat is bigger than Iraq

Article Abstract:

Political instability in North Korea and its threat to fight the U.S. could hurt the Australian economy. South Korea is Australia's third-largest trading partner, and a military crisis in Asia would seriously damage trade in the region. Although North Korea's economy is in tatters, it needs to be watched closely.
