Research as a means of organisational and management development

Article Abstract:

The UK National Health Service (NHS) employes approximately 1 million people and does approximately 18 billion pounds sterling in business annually. There is little agreement in the NHS on the definition of health, and a continuous debate on what constitutes the task of the NHS. In addition, the NHS is always faced with demand for health care outstripping supply. The NHS has undergone a number of management reorganizations and interventions in order to affect better performance of managers. One component of the NHS which has developed a unique approach to management development is the Wessex Regional Health Authority, which employs 50,000 staff and does approximately 700 million pounds in business. The Authority has implemented a program of continuous management development which requires that its staff enroll in the Schools of Management and Department of Management Science in the Universities of Bath and Southhampton to conduct research that will develop their skills.

Human resources management

Article Abstract:

Various techniques and problems encountered with leadership skills training by human resources personnel are analyzed. The critical competencies that should be achieved by the leaders are largely limited by the time alloted for leadership training. The training techniques include learning through experience, which can be important in developing strategic opportunism. Simulated workshops, on the other hand, can be important in making the leader competent in interpersonal relations. These workshops can focus on a particular problem where the human resource manager can help in analyzing the leader's reasoning and behavior. The emergence of global markets also require leaders to be aware of specific cultures. This would also make them more open to diversity awareness and handling personnel of different races.
