Corporate restructuring

Article Abstract:

The wave of restructuring that took place in the American corporate world in the mid-1990s was evaluated to ascertain if restructuring really improved economic performance. Three types of restructuring were distinguished to address the issue. These are portfolio restructuring, financial restructuring and organizational restructuring. Portfolio restructuring refers to additions through acquisitions or disposal through spin-offs of companies' businesses. On the other hand, financial restructuring involves changing the capital structure while a change from a functional to a business-unit design characterizes organizational restructuring. The results showed that financial restructuring yielded the greatest improvement in performance while organizational restructuring performed poorly and had a negative impact on performance.

Reshaping the System Development Curve

Article Abstract:

The use of application generators, program generators. and report writers helps programmers and end users in nearly all phases of the system development process. They can result in increased productivity, reduced costs, and increased accessibility to information. From the programmer's point of view, productivity tools simplify program development, make maintenance less tedious, and eliminate the need of in-depth knowledge of a system in order to use it. From the user's perspective productivity tools can significantly lower development time since the user need not have his request interpreted by the data processing department.
