Melville and dismemberment: obsession or metaphor

Article Abstract:

Allusions to amputation and other physical disabilities permeate the writings of Herman Melville in various metaphorical and symbolic ways. However, these frequent and repeated mentions suggest a deep cachected complex concerning a loss of limbs, which can be traced to events in Melville's early years. A highly sensitive writer, Melville transformed this personality trait into a creative narrative that portrayed human incapacitation metaphorically and symbolically. The character of Captain Ahab in Moby-Dick is an excellent instance of the use of physical conditions as literary metaphors.
