Article Abstract:

Incat, a Hobart shipbuilder, builds ferries claimed to be fast and stable in bad weather, ad are designed to carry passengers and cars across relatively short distances. Incat holds 40% of the worldwide market for high-speed car ferries, and wants to raise its output from about four to for or six vessels per year, according to chairman Robert Clifford. Information on other Australian Export Award finalists is included.

Suburban shire leads Victoria's wave of reform

Article Abstract:

Melton Shire, located near Melbourne in Victoria state, Australia, saves money by outsourcing services, including town planning and health care. The shire saved more than 15% in health expenditures, according to ceo Adrian Pennell. Other states leave outsourcing to the discretion of local government, but in Victoria requires outsourcing contracts for at least 50% of expenditures.

Howard gets 39% backing from CEOs

Article Abstract:

A 1998 A.C. Nielsen survey shows that Australia's executives are generally supportive of the current government. Its performance was rated average by 63% of respondents, with another 17% rating it as good. Prime Minister John Howard is backed by 39% of polled executives, while Treasurer Peter Costello received 22%. Respondents favored abolition of the payroll tax by 91%.
