Simulation of a Crisis Management Information Network

Article Abstract:

A simulation exercise to analyze the information requirements for a crisis management decision support system is presented. The behavior of decision makers during the simulation is compared to their behavior during an actual crisis. Both stress and communication dimensions are compared. A number of hypotheses are tested. The impact of the findings on training, research and design is analyzed. Research priorities for crisis management information network simulations are identified.

A partial covering approach to siting response resources for the major maritime oil spills

Article Abstract:

Models have been made, over the past decade, of emergency facilities locations, but none has specifically dealt with providing fast response to maritime oil spills. This model simulates an area where rapid initial response is necessary to avoid major environmental damage. The model shows that, if all events are equal, centrally located facilities work best, but if certain environmentally sensitive zones are emphasized, local storage of equipment is best.

A Partial Covering Approach to Siting Response Resources For Major Maritime Oil Spills

Article Abstract:

The location of oil spill response equipment is studied. The problem is similar to the location of fire houses. The model includes the probability of an oil spill and the impact of the spill in its analysis. Implications for public policy are discussed. A case study of Long Island sound illustrates the model. Tables of results are included.
